Become a savvy packer

When packing for a weekend away the intention to pack light is often replaced with a bulging suitcase and wrinkly clothes. Lisa Haynes has mastered the key to becoming the perfect packer and shares her top tips that no woman should be without.

Beach bound

If you’re planning on spending the majority of your time on a sun lounger, there isn’t a lot of point in taking much daywear. Instead focus on key swimwear pieces and cover-ups. ‘Beach to bar’ dresses are perfect for this type of holiday; just add a pair of wedges and a necklace to create a whole new look for the evening. You can also use colourful accessories when darkness falls to completely transform a plain outfit, so pack a couple of printed scarves to pop over your shoulders when temperatures start to drop.

Don’t leave home without: your favourite waterproof mascara to move easily from beach to bar.

Island hopping

If you’re moving around a lot, clothes are likely to spend a long time crammed in your suitcase, so it’s important to think about the fabric they’re made from. Avoid linen and stick to chiffon-style fabrics which won’t crease as easily. Opting for versatile separates, such as plain tops and patterned skirts, means you can mix and match your outfits, too.

Top tip: roll, don’t fold, to prevent clothes creasing.

City breaks

Avoid packing too much by limiting yourself to a holdall. Take practical outfits you can go exploring in and, if in doubt, opt for items that go with everything, like a pair of city shorts in a neutral hue. Comfy shoes are an absolute must-have, of course. Never pack a brand new pair that need breaking in. Layers are also key for switching between air-conditioned buildings and outdoor sunshine. Travel in something simple, like a maxi dress and light cardigan, to keep you warm on the plane.

Don’t leave home without: a pashmina for keeping warm in the evenings or covering shoulders from the sun.

The Rule of Three

You will only need a maximum of three of each item of clothing. Choose pieces you can mix and match, for example three tops and three bottoms can create nine different outfits.

Same goes for shoes, only take three pairs. Some comfortable footwear for travelling and walking, a pair of heels or smart shoes for the evening and flip flops for the beach.

Lay out all of the clothes you are planning on packing and cut it down by a third. You will never have enough time to wear everything you’ve packed otherwise.

Now that you’ve mastered how to pack, you can spend more time enjoying your holiday!
