Terry first travelled around Turkey back in 1979, a trip that sparked a life-long obsession with the country. Since then, he has lived there, explored it countless times, hiked in most of its imposing mountain ranges and visited the majority of its breath-taking historic sights. Top travel memory: “It wasn’t exactly a eureka moment, but around 11 years ago I realised Istanbul wasn’t just a place to pass through en route to the ‘real Turkey’, but absolutely fantastic itself, a microcosm of today’s Turkey and the entire Ottoman Empire. Georgians, Syrians, proud émigrés from Turkey’s Black Sea mountains; the green hills of the old city bristling with domes and minarets; sunlight coruscating on the Sea of Marmara; tankers nosing up the continent-dividing Bosphorus Strait; watching the sunset over Asia from a chic roof-top bar. Hip, historic, unique. Istanbul, it finally dawned on me, has it all.”
