Winter in Toronto can be bitterly cold, with temperatures ranging from -6C/21F up to 9C/48F November-March. April to October is considerably more comfortable with temperatures between 11C/52F and average highs of 26C/79F

When to visit

From June until September, when the warmth of the weather makes life on and around the city’s waters a refreshing pleasure. The Toronto International Film Festival, with star visitors and new movies screened across town, runs every September

Getting there

Airlines and airports: Most international and national carriers service Pearson International Airport, 23km north-west of downtown Toronto. Another option is Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, located on Toronto Island, minutes from downtown

Transfers: If you’re looking to hire a car, check out rental options here. Otherwise, the UP Express rail service will take you from Pearson Airport, Terminal 1, to Union Station in downtown Toronto for CAD$12.35 one-way – this takes about 25 minutes. Limos and taxis take around the same time, and cost about $60–$70. From Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the free, 15-minute shuttle bus is a great option, or taxis cost around CAD$20

Getting around

Public transport: A single fare on the TTC – the city’s comprehensive subway and bus service – is CAD$3.25

Taxis: Taxis are easily hailed, with a starting fare of CAD$4.25, while Uber is another popular choice
